Winemaker's Notes"The 2005 Io Syrah Ryan Road, bearing the name of princess Io from Greek mythology, is an excellent illustration of the ripe, rich flavors and luxurious texture that result from the warm climatic conditions and austere soils of the Ryan Road Vineyard. The wine displays lush aromas of blackberry jam and floral notes. A burst of flavors, including dark plum, brown spice and fresh tobacco greets the palate and is enhanced by a richly textured mouth feel and smooth, gravely tannins. The wine culminates with a long, luscious finish." - Jonathan Nagy, Winemaker 90 Points, James Laube, Wine Spectator, April 2008 Appellation and VineyardRyan Road Vineyard is located in the appellation of Paso Robles in northern San Luis Obispo County. The vineyard experiences warm days and cool nights and is considered a Region III on the U.C. Davis scale. Planted in 1998 using the Estrella clone and UCD Shiraz 06, the site consists of shallow, calciferous soils. The shallow soil and warm climate, along with irrigation control, combine to produce very low-vigor vines with small shoots of only 30 to 35 inches in length. Berry size is less than half that of normal Syrah, which gives the wine rich expression and superb concentration. Fermentation & Aging The Syrah was crushed into tanks and given a cold soak of four to five days before beginning fermentation. This maceration in a nonalcoholic medium has proven superb for extracting color, flavor, and richness. When the wine began fermentation, a combination of punch-downs and pump-overs was used to circulate the skins and juice. During the four most active days of fermentation, the cellar team performed “rack and return” on each tank two times per day for additional extraction and concentration. The lots were pressed off the skins at about 3 to 4 degrees Brix, so they received no maceration time in full alcohol, which can result in harsh or green tannins. The wine was aged 11 months in French oak barrels with 40% new.
